Be a Part of JTC!

Auditions

Students and parents will find information about upcoming auditions on this website, via JTC email, and through JTC social media channels. Students will attend one of the audition times listed and will then be notified if they need to attend callbacks if any (a second reading upon the director's request). Roles consist of actors, set crew/tech, and musicians (for musicals).

  • Actor – Auditions consist of doing cold readings from the script and samples of singing and dancing for musicals. In some cases, directors will ask for video submissions as part of the audition.

  • Set Crew/Tech – Students interested in tech (sets, costumes, lights, sound, stage management) should complete the registration form and will interview with our directing team at the first read through to determine what their tech position will be.

Audition Registration Requirements

Three steps need to be completed prior to auditioning:

  1. Complete online Bloomington Activity registration and pay Activity Fee (click on soccer ball). This process is the same as it is for sports, marching band, or show choir.  Make sure to go all the way through the process, even if the amount in your case is $0. Registration is not complete unless you do.
Registration is required for Actors AND Set Crew/Tech. This is a Minnesota State High School League requirement.  Contact the counseling office if you have issues or questions with this type of registration. More information about BPS registration and activity fee available HERE.

  2. Complete JTC Audition Registration form - found HERE

  3. Pay Show Fee or request scholarship.

FAILURE TO COMPLETE ANY OF THESE STEPS BY THE END OF AUDITIONS MEANS YOU WILL NOT BE CAST IN THE CURRENT JTC PRODUCTION.

At the time of the audition, the adults running the registration process will either tell you what you are missing or confirm that you have completed all the steps.

After auditions, the cast list will be posted via JTC email, on the JTC website, and via JTC social media channels. â€‹If you are not cast in the play, the MSHSL fee will be returned to the card you used to pay it, and your JTC fee will be refunded.

Fee Info

Two separate fees, an Activity Fee and a Show Fee, will be collected from ALL participants for EACH show.

Activity Fees

The District Activity fee (also called the MSHSL fee) goes directly to Jefferson High School. Like other school activities, Jefferson Theatre Company participants are required to pay activity fees. JTC has no access to these funds.

For the 2024-2025 academic year, the fee is $100 per student per activity.

Online registration is required for the activity fee portion when participating in a show. This includes tech students as well.

To start the online registration, go to the Bloomington Activity Registration website. Click on the soccer ball and follow the steps listed to complete your registration and pay the fee online.

Show Fees

Jefferson Theatre Company collects fees from all participants for every show. Jefferson Theatre Company uses these funds to pay for production costs (royalties, set construction, costumes, and props). Students also receive a show t-shirt and a video recording of the production.

Students in set crew/tech do not audition but interview with the director, complete registration forms, and pay a lower tech fee.

Please pay online when completing your JTC Audition Registration form. If your student is not cast in the show, you will be refunded within 30 days. If your student is asked to be in tech and paid an actor fee, JTC will refund the difference to you.

Scholarships

Need-based scholarships are available for both the District Activity (MSHSL) Fee and JTC’s show fee. Qualification for a scholarship is considered on an individual basis, and qualification for free or reduced lunch is not required. Please contact the director of the show for which you are auditioning for details.

General inquiries may be directed to Laura Schmit at Director@JeffersonTheatreCompany.org.

Makeup and Costumes

As part of every production, all students cast in the show are required to wear makeup, style their hair, and wear appropriate costumes. Each look is determined by the costumer for each show.  In selecting the look for a student, the costumer considers the show’s setting and the character the student is portraying.

Please take a look at this video demonstrating basic makeup for performances. Please keep in mind specific requirements may be requested for specific shows and characters. If no special requirements have been made, this is what each student should wear: Basic Theatre Makeup

JTC prides itself on having access to an extensive collection of costumes and accessories as well as high-quality makeup and wigs. However, there are several items which must be provided by each student.  Below is a list of items that are required or recommended for students participating in our shows. Additional items such as specific shoes, socks, tights, etc. are sometimes required, and these will be communicated as needed.

We recommend each student bring a bag to contain and organize all their items.  The bag may be left in the dressing room between performances. All items owned by the student should be clearly marked.

Finally, we ask that all students shower daily during performances and dress rehearsals. Clean bodies will ensure our costumes last longer!

For Every Show
  • Hairbrush

  • Comb

  • Bobby pins matching hair color

  • Ponytail holders – if hair is long (at least 2)

  • Waterproof mascara

  • Liquid eyeliner

  • Deodorant

  • Base layer- skin tone or white tank top and compression shorts to wear under the costumes. Boys should have a clean white undershirt for every performance.

Nice To Have

JTC makes every effort to keep supplies as clean as possible. The following are supplies that JTC provides for communal use. If you would like to have your own, these are the specifics of what you should purchase:

  • Ben Nye foundation and blush:  These are specialty theatre foundations and blushes which work well under theatrical lights.  It is required that every actor wear this foundation — not their own.  Feel free to work with the shades JTC has to determine your perfect shade. These are links to purchase foundation and blush.

  • Foundation applicators:  The Ben Nye foundation is a pressed powder that is applied with a damp sponge.  The particular sponges that work best are non-disposable sea sponges.  These can be rinsed and sanitized in the microwave for future use.  You can purchase them here:  Amazon.com — makeup sponges

  • Hair spray:  Maximum hold, aerosol-type.

  • Eye shadow

  • Wig cap

  • Brow pencil

  • Lipstick

  • Makeup remover wipes

  • Disposable eye-shadow applicators

Glossary

Occasionally you will be asked to provide a specific item. Below is a glossary of items for your reference:

  • Bustier: close-fitting, sleeveless, strapless top, often elasticized, usually having boning or facing to give it shape. These are typically found at specialty retailers such as David’s Bridal. Can sometimes also be found at other retailers such as Target.

  • Slip: undergarment worn beneath a dress or skirt to help it hang smoothly

  • Camisole: loose-fitting undergarment for the upper body, typically held up by shoulder straps. Should be skin-tone colored to provide coverage under see-through costumes. Can be found in most lingerie departments.

  • Spanx:  A snug fitting undergarment for the entire torso or just the bottom.  Compression shorts work as well. Skirt-wearing students whose underwear could be seen by the audience during movement should wear these.

Lettering

A student will qualify to letter when they reach 12 points of participation in Jefferson Theatre Company. Points are cumulative from year to year, but after students receive the first letter, each additional 12 points earns them a bar. The summer musical does not count toward lettering.

In order for participation to count toward lettering, students must complete a JTC Lettering worksheet for each production. Forms will be issued and collected after each show and will accumulate until a letter is earned.

Productions

Each production earns 3 points. To earn all three points, the following requirements must be met:

Participation includes acting, tech crew, or pit orchestra.

  • Student must pay the school activity fee or qualify for activity fee waivers per district policy for each production.

  • Only productions that charging an activity fee are eligible to earn points.

  • Student must participate in the production for the complete run of the show.

  • No more than two unexcused absences are allowed during a production. An unexcused absence is any missed rehearsal not expressly communicated and approved by the director either on the audition form or via electronic written communication. This communication may consist of an email or text. Verbal communication will not be accepted. Excessive lateness will be considered an absence.

  • Student may not be paid wages for their participation in the production.

Set Construction

Sign in with the Parent Set Lead or a JTC captain. Indicate the date you work on set construction on the lettering worksheet. Hours required varies from production to production. If required set construction is not completed, you will not be cast in the next production.

Set Strike

Ask the director or Parent Set Lead to sign off on your worksheet indicating participation in the set strike. Completed worksheets will be collected by the director at set strike.

Other Involvement

  • Theatre Captains (3 points per year of service).

  • Filling a volunteer need for two shows (1 point per production).

  • Helping with set construction (1 point per 4–6 hours—varies from production to production).
